Recognition received from twin town activity
In 1996, a committee made up of the European Union’s highest decision-making authorities awarded the City of Lahti a ‘Gold Star’ for the conference it organised between 9th and 11th August 1995 in co-operation with the Norden Association in Finland and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities. The theme of the conference was ‘the Effect of European Integration on Nordic Local Government'.
391 people took part in the conference, 206 from Finland, 130 from Sweden, 17 from Denmark and three from Iceland. On 19th October 1996 in Senigallia, Italy, a prize was presented to Lahti, Västerås and Randers for their excellence in twin-town activity.
In 16th June 2000, the city was again awarded the ‘Gold Star’ at an event held in Oulu. The award was made for an event hosted by Lahti's German twin town of Suhl between 4th and 9th June 1999, in which not only Lahti, but also Suhl’s other twin towns of Begles (France), Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic), Lezno (Poland) and Smoljan (Bulgaria) also took part.
