In 16th June 2000, the city was again awarded the ‘Gold Star’ at an event held in Oulu. The award was made for an event hosted by Lahti's German twin town of Suhl between 4th and 9th June 1999, in which not only Lahti, but also Suhl’s other twin towns of Begles (France), Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic), Lezno (Poland) and Smoljan (Bulgaria) also took part.
