In Lahti, the Finnish tradition of building from timber extends even to its residential buildings. Modern wooden-built apartment buildings have been constructed to complement residential areas with older traditional-style wooden houses. A completely new wooden-built residential suburb, which is set to become the largest in Scandinavia, is currently under construction in Lahti. With its lake and forest setting and its low rise and compact building style, the new Karisto residential area has been developed with community spirit in mind.
