Lahti is one of Finland's leading design cities. Its greatest asset is the highly valued educational institute: the Lahti University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Design. The institute has gained international recognition in particular for jewellery and industrial design.

The Lahti region has one of the largest concentrations of environmental business in Finland. Environmental expertise in the region focuses on soil and water research, as well as waste treatment and recycling. The Helsinki University Department of Ecological and Environmental Sciences, based in Lahti, engages in scientific environmental research and education. The environmental business sector is a rapidly growing branch, which is mainly incorporated in a number of traditional industries, such as the plastics, metal and logistic industries.
Lahti Science and Business Park is the leader of national environmental technology cluster.
Logistic Centre
Lahti’s favourable logistic location has attracted many logistic operators and other businesses to the region. Lahti is also a gateway to Russia by railway.
Increasing traffic on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the new Helsinki harbour have created new possibilities for concentrating the distribution centre operations in Southern Finland to Lahti.
Grain Expertise
The Lahti region has the largest and most versatile concentration of grain expertise in the country. Grain processing is simultaneously both a traditional and a modern industrial branch, which invests
heavily in research and development.
