Autumn of this year will usher in changes to the Lahti main library’s services and premises for adults, located on the first floor of the building. The work is slated to begin on 12 September. All the furniture, equipment, and books will be removed temporarily in the course of September. In the final months of the year, the floor and ceiling will be renovated and annual repairs will be carried out in this part of the building. The furnishing of the area and installation of equipment will begin in December. The premises in their new form will be unveiled to the public in the early part of 2017.
The main library will remain open throughout the work. It will operate with shorter opening hours for the remainder of the summer. Then, from the beginning of September, the library will be open between 10am and 8pm from Monday to Friday (with self-service available from 8am to 10 am) and between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The main library’s services for children and young people, found on the first floor, and the media and music section, on the second floor, will serve library patrons normally throughout the renovation project. The auditorium will remain open during the work, but the meeting room and researchers’ rooms will be closed.
While the renovation is in progress, a small selection of adult literature and the entire storage selection will remain available. Some of the main library’s materials will be transferred to local libraries for the duration of the work. The holdings of the local libraries and the Päijät-Häme libraries will be available for loan and can be reserved normally for the full duration of the work. Items can be reserved via the Päijät-Häme online library service LASTU at lastukirjastot.fi and by visiting or phoning the libraries.
The renovation project is designed to improve the functionality and pleasantness of the adult facilities. The goal is to improve the way the library’s up-to-date and extensive selection is presented; enable more versatile use of the facilities; create opportunities for small-scale events; and increase the space available for reading, relaxing, and working.
This work is part of a project aimed at enhancing the functionality and interior design of the main library’s customer facilities. In earlier phases, the children and young people’s section underwent work in 2012 and the media and music services were renewed in 2014–2015.
We request that our patrons take out large numbers of books in August and September, before the work begins, to ensure that a large proportion of the selection remains available for loan throughout the project. Items can be borrowed, returned, and reserved as normal while the work is being carried out.
