Food establishments

Food establishments include coffee shops, restaurants and food stores, for example. Food establishments that handle animal-based foodstuffs before retail are called facilities. When a food establishment or facility begins its operation, a notification must be made to the environmental health services beforehand.
Food establishment

Food establishment refers to any building, establishment, outdoor or indoor facility where foodstuffs are manufactured, stored, transported, sold, served or otherwise handled with the intention of selling or passing them on.

When starting a food establishment, a written notification must be made to the environmental health services at least 4 weeks before beginning the operation. The same applies when making a significant change to a food establishment already in operation. Beginning the operation does not require an inspection carried out by a supervisory authority. A notification must also be made about selling foodstuffs online as well as a food establishment operating in a private home.

Food facilities

Operating a food facility requires approval by an authority before starting. Approving a food facility requires that the facility complies with the requirements defined in food legislation. All facilities and warehouses producing or handling animal-based foodstuffs must be approved, as well as wholesalers that store animal-based foodstuffs for more than 48 hours with the intention of supplying these foodstuffs to other facilities.
