Packaging labels

The purpose of packaging labels is to provide sufficient information about packaged or unpackaged foodstuffs. The labels must be truthful and must not mislead the consumer.

It is important to list any allergens on the packaging labels. As for unpackaged foodstuffs, the consumer must be provided with sufficient information about the ingredients of the foodstuff or product, e.g. with a separate fact sheet. Obligatory packaging labels for foodstuffs are detailed in regulation 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the provision of food information to consumers as well as regulation 834/2014 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on the provision of food information to consumers.  You can receive more information about packaging labels from the food information guide published by Evira and from the environmental health services.

Food supplements

Food supplements are food products that differ from normal foodstuffs by either their appearance or the way in which they are used. They are sold as capsules, tablets and powder bags, for example. Food supplements must comply with the same packaging label requirements as foodstuffs. When food supplements are sold online, the packaging labels must comply with legal requirements. You can receive more information about packaging labels and their supervision from the food supplement guide published by Evira and from the environmental health services.
