Insect pests can be classified as fabric, foodstuff and wood pests, vermin and other insects that are present indoors.
Fabric pests refer to insects the larvae of which feed on various textile fibres. Food pests eat or contaminate foodstuffs with their excrement. Vermin refer to bed bugs, head lice, fleas and mites. Other unwanted guests include the silverfish, ants and fruit flies.
Rodents and birds
Rodents and birds can foul foodstuffs with their excrement. Rodents can also damage structures or electrical cables, for example.
The environmental health department will provide counselling regarding pest extermination. You can also bring insects to the department for identification. Bring identifiable insects in a sealed box intact, do not crush them.
You can buy pesticides, repellents and bait boxes at locations such as hardware stores and department stores. Contact information for pest extermination companies can be found on the service directory of the phone book as well as online.
