Moving to Lahti

Are you considering moving to Lahti, or do you already live here? The City of Lahti has created this guide to help you, read more!

Moving to Lahti: learn what you need to know here!

Lahti is home to approximately 11,000 foreign-language speakers, representing nine per cent of the population. Foreign-language speakers are people whose native language is not Finnish, Swedish, or Sami. Our city is home to people from all over the world, each with their own language, culture, and way of life.

Are you considering moving to Lahti, or do you already live here? The City of Lahti has created this Newcomer’s Guide to help you settle into life in Lahti and the Päijät-Häme region. Here, you will find information about important services for people who are moving to the area.

International House Lahti offers specialised services to all non-native speakers who live in Lahti or are planning to move here. We provide support in matters related to everyday life in Lahti, migration, and other questions connected to your new hometown. You can find us at the Service Centre (“Palvelutori” in Finnish) in the Trio shopping centre. Our mission is to guide you to the right services and to offer individual support.

Finnish Immigration Service

Moving to a new country involves many tasks and details to remember. Many of the steps are linked, so it is important to complete them in the correct order. This helps ensure that you meet the legal requirements for entering, living, working, or studying in Finland.

If you need a permit, you must apply through the Finnish Immigration Service’s Enter Finland online service or visit a service point in person.

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) is responsible for decisions on residence permits, immigration, asylum, refugee status, and citizenship. It also manages Finland’s reception system.

You can apply for many residence permits and register your right of residence in the EU through the Enter Finland online service. If you cannot use a computer, you can complete a paper application and submit it at a Finnish Immigration Service service point.
