Learning in nature has been shown to support children’s learning in many ways. It improves concentration, strengthens motor skills and promotes interaction between pupils. A hands-on outdoor learning environment can be especially beneficial for those who struggle to focus in a traditional classroom.
The programme includes tailored learning modules for each grade level. For example, fourth-graders will explore the circular economy at the Kujala waste management centre and take a field trip to Linnaistensuo mire.
Early connection to nature leaves a lasting impact
An early relationship with nature and a positive attitude towards the environment – known as nature sensitivity – lay a strong foundation for environmental awareness and action later in life.
While nature has been used as a learning environment in Lahti before, this is the city’s first environmental education programme that covers nearly all levels of basic education. To support teachers, a practical guide has been developed with clearly described modules for each grade, also written from the pupil’s perspective. The programme is also supported with ready-made materials and transport arrangements.
The environmental education programme is part of the Lahti as a learning environment entity in basic education, which also includes a culture programme, the JunnuUniversity science education programme, an entrepreneurship education module and a drama education programme that develops emotional and social skills.
