Local youth are using Minecraft to design a future market square for Lahti

In Minethon, an event designed for elementary school students, pupils collaborate in groups to design and build a vision for the future Market Square in Lahti. What do they envision for the market square? What services might it provide? How can the market square be made enjoyable and functional for all city residents? Now is the time to unleash your imagination and create bold ideas!

In this unique gaming event, local young people will design and build the future Market Square in Lahti using Minecraft. The event will take place over three days, from October 29th to 31st. Participants will have the opportunity to unleash their creativity and collaboration skills while playing together under the guidance of experienced educators.

Registration for the gaming event through schools

Students in grades 7 to 9 from Lahti’s elementary schools are invited to participate. Each elementary school in Lahti will select one team of about five students based on their applications. A total of approximately 50 young people will be able to participate. Registration will open in September.

“Gaming is an engaging way to involve young people in planning the city centre. It will be interesting to see what ideas Lahti Market Square will receive when young students brainstorm using Minecraft.”

Riitta Niskanen, Project Manager, Urban Planning

For local youth, the gaming event presents an opportunity to collaborate in teams, learn new skills, and foster creativity. Participants will engage in discussions about their aspirations for the future of the market square and a safe, inviting city centre for everyone. Additionally, the event promises fun and the chance to make new friends.

For the city of Lahti, Minethon serves as an excellent platform to introduce young people to urban planning through Minecraft. It encourages them to contribute fresh ideas and actively participate in envisioning Lahti’s future.

The completed projects will be presented to a panel comprising urban planning professionals and representatives from basic education. The ideas generated by the young participants will be considered in the development of Lahti’s market square as part of the overall vision for the city centre.
