Maarten Baas’ time-themed artwork installed on Malski facade

To celebrate the third anniversary of the Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva, Dutch artist Maarten Baas’ Real Time Sweepers Clock has been installed on the facade of Malski. The Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva is located in the Malski building.

The video installation, originally on view at Malva’s 2022 opening exhibition Hide and Seek, is now visible to passersby on Päijänteenkatu in Lahti.

In the 12-hour looped video, two men sweep piles of trash that form the hands of a clock, moving them minute by minute. The work is part of Baas’ Real Time series, where timekeeping is transformed into human performance. The piece also explores themes of consumption and environmental urgency – resonating strongly with Lahti’s identity as an environmental city.

Real Time Sweepers Clock (2009) was awarded the prestigious ArtPrize in 2016. Artworks from the series are also featured in major public spaces and collections, including Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
