Official mail goes digital – Suomi.fi messages coming in 2026

From the beginning of 2026, official mail will be delivered mainly online through Suomi.fi Messages. When you log in to Lahti City services or any public e-service with strong authentication, an electronic mailbox will be created for you automatically.

More than two million people already use Suomi.fi Messages. After the change, the service will reach over four million users. The aim is to make communication faster and more secure – no more waiting for letters to arrive by post.

Once activated, you’ll receive official mail from several authorities in one place. Paper copies will no longer be sent for the same matter. Lahti City will use Suomi.fi Messages for decisions such as school placements, waste management, plot allocations, and employment service appointments. Notifications for early childhood education decisions will follow later.

If you are an adult and do not yet use Suomi.fi Messages, the service will be activated when you log in to a public e-service. You’ll be asked to provide your email address and confirm it within one hour. This ensures you receive alerts when new mail arrives. After that, you continue to the service as usual.

The change does not apply to minors or people under guardianship. If you never use online services with strong authentication, you will still receive paper mail.
