Preparations for the Vesijärvi ice route are currently under way. The ice surface is being finished by pumping water from the lake onto the track, which helps create a smoother and thicker skating surface. For safety reasons, the route should not be used at this stage while the work continues.
The first section of the route, between Lokki and Ankkuri, will open during the weekend. As ice conditions improve, the route will later be extended towards Ruoriniemi.
– The Vesijärvi skating route is a shared space for everyone, from young children to more experienced skaters. Everyone can enjoy the route at their own pace and skill level, says Sports Manager Markku Ahokas.
Ahokas encourages users to show the same kind of mutual consideration on the ice route as on cross-country ski tracks at the start of the season. The route is suitable both for skating and for kick sledding.
The ice route is maintained according to weather conditions
The ice routes are cleared of snow and maintained as required by weather conditions, in some cases on a daily basis. Up-to-date information on maintenance work is available on service signs at the starting points of the skating routes and through the LahtiSkate service. Extra caution is advised when using the route during maintenance.
– Skaters should be aware that natural ice is always more uneven than the surface of an artificially frozen ice rink. Maintenance crews use specialised ice planing equipment to make the surface as smooth as possible, Ahokas explains.
