Discovering the joys of cycling as a daily commuter

Have you ever wondered what it's like to integrate cycling into your daily routine? For me, cycling has been more than just a hobby – it's been a way of life, writes Pasi Widgren.

From childhood adventures to navigating through work commutes, cycling has always been a constant companion. In fact, during my tenure at my previous job, I pedaled over 50,000 kilometers over a span of 15 years, coincidentally without a single sick day.

But what makes cycling so special? It’s the small moments – like witnessing breathtaking sunrises along the lakeside routes or hearing the crisp crunch of frost-covered leaves under my tires during autumn rides. Even braving icy drizzles in the winter becomes a memorable experience, as I pedal through, eyes squinting against the cold breeze.

My daily commute spans approximately six kilometers – an ideal distance for cycling, taking me briskly to my destination in about 15 minutes. Although a car may offer a slightly faster journey, the convenience of cycling, especially when considering parking woes, is unparalleled.

Yet, I don’t always stick to the shortest route. Exploring alternative paths, from bike lanes to forest trails, adds a sense of adventure to my rides. Particularly in the summer months, winding through scenic trails becomes a joyous pastime. Whether it’s taking the scenic route through Karisto to the city center via Linnaistensuo or traversing boardwalks on crisp spring mornings, each ride is a unique experience.

The benefits of daily cycling

The benefits of daily cycling extend beyond physical activity. It’s a chance to immerse oneself in the changing seasons and weather patterns. Beginning the day with a bit of exercise allows for contemplation, while the ride back clears the mind of work-related stress.

Moreover, the camaraderie among fellow cyclists adds a sense of community to the journey. A friendly wave or nod to familiar faces along the route is a small yet cherished ritual of commuter cycling.

Among countless memorable encounters, one instance stands out – a chance encounter with a fellow cyclist in Lahti. As we waited at a traffic light, I noticed their rear tire seemed deflated. Offering assistance, I pumped air into the tire using the portable pump I always carry in my backpack. It was a simple gesture, but it made a difference. This encounter reinforced the notion that a little help goes a long way.

For those considering commuting by bike, I offer a few tips. Firstly, secure and safe bicycle storage is essential. Investing in a reliable bike ensures smooth, safe, and enjoyable rides. Regular maintenance, such as weekly cleaning and annual servicing, keeps the bike in top condition.

Cycling isn’t just environmentally friendly; it’s also economically sound. As the saying goes, cycling is like putting money in the bank. Adopting a proactive cycling approach ensures seamless integration with other road users.

In closing, I’d like to share an old adage with those hesitant to embrace cycle commuting: “Start cycling yesterday and reminisce about the journey today, for tomorrow’s ride will always be easier.”
