The Textile Deposit

This summer, city of Lahti has been running a pilot on an incentivized recycling scheme for textile waste. The Textile Deposit pilot scheme wanted to see whether a small incentive could get the locals sorting and recycling their old textiles more actively. With a small reward, the recycling rate for textile waste went up by a staggering 500%. Read more here.

How does it work?

The collection point was located in Osallistumistila Kymppi on the 2nd floor.

Large amounts of textile waste should be taken to the Kujala Waste Center.

Textile waste can be taken to other collection points (recycling center Patina and the Harjula center), but pool and cafe passes are only given out at the Trio pop up collection point.

Coffee vouchers are valid in the cafe named in the voucher during the campaign period 29.5.–9.6.2023.

The textiles collected in Lahti are processed in the Lounais-Suomi waste management plant, where they will be processed into recycled fibre for industrial use. In accordance with the principles of circularity, the fibre recovered from the collected textiles can be reused in creating new products such as thread, insulation materials and acoustic panels.

What goes into textile waste

Dry and clean clothes and household textiles that are no longer fit for use, including coats, trousers, skirts, shirts, sheets, towels, and tablecloths.

Pack your textiles into a plastic bag and seal the bag tightly.

Please donate your usable textiles to charities!

What should not go into textile waste

Underwear, socks, pillows, duvets, cushions, rugs, belts, bags, shoes, or textiles that are damp, moldy, infested with insects, or have a strong odor cannot be recycled as textile waste. Please sort these into mixed waste.
