Lahti residents have brainstormed projects for 2020 relating to Lahti’s status as the European Green Capital

The City of Lahti invited residents, associations and companies to brainstorm projects that they would like to implement in the European Green Capital.

We received a total of 69 great applications. The decision on the projects to be funded has now been made. Lahti will support the ideas of 22 local operators with a total of EUR 40,000. The Green Capital projects and events will start appearing in the Lahti streetscape right from the start of 2020.

The initiatives chosen include projects of various sizes and schemes offering diverse opportunities for participation by various target groups, such as young people, seniors, entrepreneurs and special groups. The jury rated the applications, taking into account, for example, the applicant’s commitment to environmental responsibility, their need for funding and the possibilities the project offered Lahti residents for participation. Some of the projects selected for funding include, for example, the implementation of the event Cycling Know-how for Seniors, the maintenance of the ice track on Lake Vesijärvi and workshops for kindergarten and school children to make musical instruments from recycled materials.

The aim is to make it possible for as many residents as possible to participate in the events of the city’s year as the European Green Capital. This autumn’s first project application round was open to all communities and entities, with community spirit as one of its primary selection criteria.  The foundation implementing the Green Capital project will open up further funding opportunities in the future. The plan is to make it a continuous process to support various projects.
