Finland has a clear and structured education system that supports learning from early childhood to higher education. Education is mainly publicly funded and based on equal access for all.

The City of Lahti provides basic education and general upper secondary education in its schools.

Vocational education in the Lahti region is mainly provided by regional institutions, such as Salpaus Further Education.

In Finland, compulsory education continues until the age of 18. After completing basic education, all young people must continue their studies in general upper secondary education or vocational education.

School and basic education

Children in Finland begin compulsory education with pre-primary school, followed by nine years of basic education. All permanent residents are required to participate in this system. Education is free, and students receive free school meals. Free transportation is provided if the distance to school is over 5 km or the route is difficult. Basic education includes primary (grades 1–6) and lower secondary school (grades 7–9). It starts at age 7 and continues until completion or until the student turns 17.
