Climate change increases extreme weather phenomena, such as rains and severe floods, as well as heat waves and periods of drought. In Lahti we aim to find out how we can both adapt to changes and mitigate climate change through housing and construction solutions.
Housing and construction cause a third of Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions. In other words, our lifestyles significantly affect the progression of climate change. In Lahti, we seek solutions on how to diminish the emissions of housing and construction. In the different projects we gather the specialists from the fields of education, research and industry and operate as a linkage between the fields. Currently we are carrying out a project called The Innovation Network of Carbon Neutral Construction. Lahti aims at carbon neutrality in 2025.
Converting an oil-heated terraced house into a carbon-neutral building
In this project, we study ways to implement buildings’ energy generation without burning carbon in any of its forms. The subject of the study is an 18-apartment terraced house built in 1991 that is located in Villähde, Lahti, and currently uses oil heating.
Climate-smart solutions for housing companies
The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of the connection between climate change, greenhouse gases and housing among the housing companies and building managers in Päijät-Häme.
Development project for the commissioning of wooden apartment buildings
The aim of the project is to promote the cooperation of construction companies and wood product suppliers in product development and, through it, boost the development of wood construction practices.
