LUT University will start a Bachelor’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management in Lahti in the autumn of 2022. The programme will be in English, and its intake will be roughly 60 students. Applications can be submitted in the joint application procedure of spring 2022. LUT’s Finnish-language studies in industrial engineering and management will continue as before on the Lappeenranta campus.
Industrial engineering and management is one of LUT University’s most popular fields of study in technology. It combines mathematical and technical problem-solving with leadership and management. Graduates find employment in various areas of the public and private sectors.
According to Rector Juha-Matti Saksa, LUT University, industrial engineering and management is a natural continuation to the Bachelor’s programmes in technology starting next year in Lahti. In autumn 2021, LUT will start English-language Bachelor’s programmes in energy and software technology in collaboration with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT).
“LUT’s international degree programmes are in high demand, which is why we want to start offering Bachelor’s studies also in Lahti. The programme will not compete with programmes that the LAB University of Applied Sciences is offering in Lahti,” Saksa points out.
LUT has had a foothold in Lahti since 1996, and industrial engineering and management has been at the core of LUT’s activity in the region since then. Head of Department Vesa Karvonen says that the Lahti campus currently employs four professors of industrial engineering and management and their research groups – approximately 30 experts in total.
“Our aim is to create a high-level, international degree programme that takes advantage of the experience accumulated from our Finnish-language degree programme and its tried-and-true course contents. The new programme will be designed to meet future European quality requirements,” Vesa Karvonen explains.
LUT hopes to attract students to the programme from both Finland and abroad. LUT’s Bachelor’s programmes amount to 180 ECTS credits and take roughly three years. Students who complete the degree are entitled to continue in a related Master’s programme, which is 120 ECTS credits.
Pekka Timonen, Mayor of Lahti, highlights that the range of education programmes is growing in Lahti.
“Lahti is taking a leap forward as a university city. Bachelor’s programmes play an important role. The Degree Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management also meets the needs of local industries,” Timonen comments.
