Removal of the stone paving on the carriageway of Aleksanterinkatu will begin next week. The street will be closed to motor traffic on market day, Wednesday 3 June, when restrictions on service traffic will also come into effect. The taxi rank will remain on Marolankatu, but the coach stop will move to Aleksanterinkatu to the bus stop west of the Rauhankatu junction.
The carriageway and cycle lane on Aleksanterinkatu will be designated as a worksite area immediately after the market. Cyclists will use the pavement on the southern side of Aleksanterinkatu. Cycling and the use of electric scooters are prohibited on the northern side.
During the renovation, service traffic is only allowed on the pavements of Aleksanterinkatu on weekday mornings between 05–08. Parking spaces for service traffic will be available on Hämeenkatu near the Rautatienkatu and Mariankatu junctions. Service traffic and pre-booked transport for Seurahuone will also be allowed to stop in the roadside lane on Vesijärvenkatu. As a result, the parking spaces between the trees on the western side of the street will be removed from use.
Bus route moves to Hämeenkatu – note the changed traffic arrangements
The bus stops near the market square on Aleksanterinkatu will move to Hämeenkatu, near the Rauhankatu junction, from Monday 1 June. To ensure smooth bus traffic, Hämeenkatu will be one-way east to west between Vesijärvenkatu and Mariankatu during the works, and parking arrangements on the street will change.
At the traffic lights at the junction of Aleksanterinkatu and Vesijärvenkatu, vehicles must stop at the signal gantry and the marked stop line to leave enough space for buses turning from Vesijärvenkatu onto Aleksanterinkatu. Cars that pass the stop line and stop in front of the pedestrian crossing will prevent buses from turning. In addition to the location of the traffic lights, lane arrangements have changed. When continuing straight along Aleksanterinkatu, use the right-hand lane.
Summer timetables for public transport will also begin on Monday. Read more in the Lahti Region Transport announcement.
